About Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (YAG) Crystal

Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) crystal is cubic, isotropic and has excellent optical and thermodynamic properties. Its mechanical properties and chemical stability are close to sapphire crystal, but there is no birefringence effect of sapphire crystal. Pure YAG crystal has high transmittance in the region of 0.25- 5 µm and no absorption in the region of 2-3 µm, while glass has a strong H2O absorption band in this region. Therefore, undoped pure YAG crystal is a new substrate and window material for ultraviolet and infrared optical equipments. At the same time, the excellent physicochemical and optical properties of YAG crystal make it an important optical crystal material in high temperature and high energy physical environment.

Advantages of YAG:

  1. Transmission in 0.25-5.0 µm, no absorption in 2-3 µm
  2. High thermal conductivity, 10 times better than glasses
  3. Extremely hard and durable
  4. Non-birefringence
  5. Stable mechanical and chemical properties
  6. High bulk damage threshold
  7. High index of refraction, facilitating low aberration lens design
