Platinum Iridium Wire

Platinum Iridium (Pt/Ir) Wire
Product Platinum Iridium Wire (Pt/Ir Wire)
Part Number PT-02

Platinum Iridium alloy is a platinum based binary alloy containing iridium. It is a continuous solid solution at high temperature. Solid phase decomposition occurs when it is slowly cooled to 975- 700℃, but the phase equilibrium process is very slow. Iridium is difficult to volatilize and oxidize, which can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of platinum. The combination of platinum and iridium alloy is due to the volatility and oxidation of iridium, which can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of platinum.

NCE can provide platinum iridium alloys, including Pt/Ir5, Pt/Irl0, Pt/Ir20, Pt/Ir25 and other alloys with high hardness, high melting point, high corrosion resistance and low contact resistance. Our Platinum Iridium Wire can be pulled to 0.05 mm. Please contact us for more details. Get a Quote Now! For other metals and precious metals, please check our Metals/Precious Metals catalog page. Production Method

The ingot is melted under the protection of argon in the induction furnace. The ingot is then cold processed after hot breakdown, and drawn to the required diameters.

Typical Applications:

  1. Instrument materials. They are classic weak current contact and conductive ring materials, highly reliable ignition materials for aeroengines, potentiometer windings and wire tensioning materials for various precision instruments, sensors and micro motors, thick film resistance materials in microelectronic technology, etc.
  2. Electrode materials in chlor-alkali electrolysis industry.
  3. Dental and other medical materials.
  4. Standard resistance, weight and meter ruler materials.
  5. Pt/Ir10 alloy and Au/Pd40 alloy can be used as medium temperature thermocouple, which affects its stability due to the volatilization loss of iridium. In fact, platinum iridium alloys with high iridium content are not suitable for long-term use at high temperature. The iridium content of alloys widely used in industry is generally less than 30%. Pt/Ir5 and Pt/Ir10 are classical potentiometer winding materials. Pt/Ir17.5 is   a brush material, and Pt/Ir25 is a highly reliable aeroengine ignition contact material. Platinum iridium alloy has been replaced by a variety of gold-based alloys as winding materials and brush materials, but Pt/Ir25 alloy has no reliable replacement material so far.

Properties

  1. Platinum iridium alloy has high melting point, high density, high hardness, high strength and high elasticity. These properties are enhanced with the increase of iridium concentration.
  2. Alloys containing more than 10% iridium have age hardening effect and increase with the increase of iridium concentration, but the precipitation rate is low.
  3. The resistivity of Pt/Ir alloy increases with the increase of Ir concentration, while the resistance temperature coefficient decreases. Platinum iridium alloy has low contact resistance, but it is easy to be polluted by organic atmosphere, which increases the contact resistance. Platinum iridium alloy has a positive thermal potential for platinum and increases with the increase of iridium concentration.
  4. The addition of iridium to platinum significantly improves the chemical corrosion resistance of platinum.
  5. With the increase of iridium concentration and heating temperature, the volatilization weight loss of platinum iridium alloy increases.
  6. Platinum iridium alloy has high deformation resistance and work hardening rate, and the working properties become worse with the increase of iridium content. The alloy has well-developed intracrystalline segregation and dendrites, which can only be cold worked after high temperature thermal processing.
