About Niobium Carbide (NbC) Powder

Niobium carbide is black cubic crystal or purple gray powder and belongs to sodium chloride type cubic crystal system. It is insoluble in hot and cold hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid and nitric acid, but soluble in hot mixed solution of hydrofluoric acid and nitric acid. It has the characteristics of high melting point (3500°C), high hardness (microhardness > 235 GPa, harder than corundum), good chemical stability (stable at 1000 ~ 1100°C, rapidly oxidized to niobium pentoxide above 1100°C). Niobium carbide is easy to melt in titanium carbide, zirconium carbide, tungsten carbide and other compounds to form isomorphic solid solution, so it can be used to manufacture cermet, heat-resistant alloy and cemented carbide. It can be used as an additive of cemented carbide, which can significantly improve the thermal hardness, thermal shock resistance, hot pressing resistance and oxidation resistance of cemented carbide. The cutting tools made of it also have good thermal hardness, thermal shock resistance and thermal oxidation resistance. The composite materials have also been widely used in fusion reactors, machining, metallurgy, aerospace, and other fields.

Preparation

Niobium pentoxide reduction process usually uses niobium pentoxide and carbon black as raw materials to prepare niobium carbide in industry. First, niobium pentoxide and carbon black are mixed into carbonization material in proportion, and then they are put into graphite crucible, heated to 1600-1800°C by a high frequency electric furnace in hydrogen or vacuum for first carbonization. And then carbon black is added, niobium carbide is prepared by mixing and then heating the mixture to 1800-1900°C in hydrogen or vacuum for second carbonization.

Niobium carbide can also be prepared from niobium and carbon black by direct method. Niobium powder and carbon black are mixed in proportion, and then heated to 1600-1700°C in vacuum or hydrogen to carbonize directly.

Typical Applications:

As a partial substitute of tantalum carbide, Niobium Carbide Powder is widely used in refractory high temperature materials and cemented carbide additives.

  1. Application in composite materials

(1) As one of the raw materials of composite ceramic materials, composite ceramic materials with high hardness, high melting point, excellent chemical stability and conductivity are often used in wear-resistant parts, cutting tools and electrodes.

(2) Cemented carbide can not only be used as an inhibitor of cemented carbide grain growth, but also form the third dispersed phase except WC and CO with other carbides, which can significantly improve the thermal hardness, thermal shock resistance, hot pressing resistance and oxidation resistance of cemented carbide. Niobium carbide can be used to prepare cemented carbide tool materials with excellent cutting performance, because it has the advantages of improving the hardness and fracture toughness of the alloy.

(3) Surfacing electrode

  1. Application in coating materials

(1) As a metal carbide, niobium carbide coating on die steel has high hardness, heat resistance and wear resistance. Therefore, the wear resistance of die surface can be improved by coating it on steel.

(2) The metal workpiece coating is compounded with niobium carbide layer on the surface of the metal workpiece substrate, which greatly improves the surface hardness, which can reach hv2800 or more. At the same time, it improves the working temperature and microstructure density of the workpiece, thus prolonging its service life.
