About Chromium Carbide (Cr3C2) Powder

Chromium Carbide (Cr3C2) powder is a gray powder, with an orthorhombic crystal structure. It is insoluble in water and resistant to acid and alkali. The molecular weight of Cr3C2 is 180.02. It contains 13.34% of carbon. The density is 6.65-6.68 g/cm3. The melting point is 1890℃ and the boiling point is 3800℃. It is a high melting point inorganic material with good wear resistance, corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance in high temperature environment (1000-1100℃). It is widely used as thermal spraying material for metal surface protection, grain refiner for cemented carbide and other wear-resistant and corrosion-resistant components. The cermets based on Cr3C2 have excellent oxidation resistance at high temperature. After 5 hours exposure at 982℃, the surface of cermets is only slightly dark. Under the same conditions, 18-8 stainless steel has been destroyed obviously, while WC-6Co alloy is completely oxidized.

Preparation

Carbonization of chromium powder 3Cr + 2C → Cr3C2

The 325 mesh metal chromium powder is prepared by grinding carbon black in the proportion of 13.5% – 64% (mass) (more than 11.33% of theoretical combined carbon) and electrolytic chromium, which is dry mixed by ball mill and used as raw material. 1%~3% stearic acid is added as lubricant. The pressure is over 1t/cm2. The pressure formed powder is put into graphite plate or crucible, heated to 1500-1700°C in hydrogen gas stream (hydrogen dew point is about – 35°C) with Taman furnace or induction heating furnace, and maintained for 1 h to carbonize chromium to form chromium carbide, which is then cooled to produce chromium carbide.

Other Trade Names: CR3C2 160; CR3C2 300; trichromium dicarbide

Typical Applications:

  1. Chromium Carbide can be used as additive of cemented carbide (such as grain refiner of tungsten carbide based cemented carbide), which can thus be used in mining, machining, etc.
  2. It can also be used as additive of welding material. The service life of the welding trip made of it can be increased several times when it is used on the working face of some mechanical equipment (such as coal mill, ball mill, jaw plate, etc.).
  3. It is used extensively as a thermal spraying material for metal surface protection process.
