Cerium hexaborate (CeB6, also known as cerium borate, cebix, cebix, sometimes called CeB) is an inorganic compound.

Cerium hexaborate (CeB6) is a cathode material with high electron emissivity because of its low work function. It is more resistant to carbon pollution and has a longer life than lanthanum borate cathode.

The usual working temperature of cerium hexaborate is 1450°C. Cerium hexaborate, like lanthanum hexaborate, evaporates slowly during cathode operation. CeB6 cathode can keep its best shape for a longer time at 1850 K, so it has a longer life. At the same time, the evaporation rate is about 30% slower than that of lanthanum borate, and the hot cathode coating of cerium borate is more difficult to remove than lanthanum borate.

Typical application:

Cerium hexaborate is widely used in the fields of electron microscope, microwave tube, electron beam etching, electron beam welding, X-ray tube and free electron laser. At present, cerium hexaborate crystal has been successfully used in the desk scanning electron microscope, and has become an excellent and stable filament material.

Cerium hexaborate is mainly used as the coating of hot cathode, or the hot cathode is directly composed of cerium hexaborate crystal. Cerium hexaborate (CeB6) and lanthanum hexaborate (LaB6) are often used as some high current hot cathode coatings. Hexaboride has a lower work function, about 2.5 ev, and it is resistant to cathodic pollution. Cerium borate cathodes have a lower evaporation rate than lanthanum borate at 1700 K, but they will become consistent at 1850k or even higher at temperatures above that. The life of cerium borate cathode is 50% longer than that of lanthanum borate because of its higher carbon pollution resistance. The brightness of boride cathode is ten times that of tungsten cathode, and its lifetime is 10-15 times that of tungsten cathode. Some laboratory tests show that CeB6 is more resistant to the negative effects of carbon pollution than LaB6.
