About Barium Titanate Powder (BTO Powder)

Barium Titanate Powder (BaTiO3 Powder, BTO Powder) is a mixed oxide of barium and titanium, also known as barium metatitanate, the chemical formula is BaTiO3. Barium titanate is a ferroelectric ceramic material, which has optical refraction effect and piezoelectric properties. Barium titanate is a white powder or transparent crystal. It is insoluble in water but soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid. Barium titanate is widely used in the area of ceramic capacitors, PTC thermistors, wave filters, and chemical catalyst. It is also a piezoelectric material for microphones and other transducers.

Production

There are many methods to prepare barium titanate, such as the solid phase method and the co-precipitation method.

Solid phase method:

Barium titanate can be prepared by calcining barium carbonate and titanium dioxide, which can be doped with any other materials.

TiO2 + BaCO3 = BaTiO3 + CO2

Co-precipitation method:

Mix and dissolve barium chloride and titanium tetrachloride in equal amount, and heat to 70 °C. Then oxalic acid was dripped to obtain barium titanoyl oxalate hydrate [BaTiO (C2O4) 2·4H2O] precipitation, which was washed, dried, and then pyrolyzed to obtain the product.

BaCl2 + TiCl4 + 2H2C2O4 + 5H2O = BaTiO(C2O4)2·4H2O↓ + 6HCl

BaTiO(C2O4)2·4H2O = BaTiO3 + 2CO2↑ + 2CO↑ + 4H2O

After refining metatitanic acid, barium chloride solution is added, and then ammonium carbonate is added under stirring to form barium carbonate and metatitanic acid co-precipitation. The product is obtained after calcination.

BaCl2 + (NH4)2CO3 = BaCO3 + 2NH4Cl

H2TiO3 + BaCO3 = BaTiO3 + CO2↑ + H2O

Typical Applications:

Barium Titanate is used as a dielectric material for ceramic capacitors, a piezoelectric material for microphones and other sensors. As a piezoelectric material, it largely replaces lead zirconate titanate.

The polycrystalline barium titanate shows positive temperature coefficient, which makes it a useful material for thermistor and self-regulation of electric heating system.

The dielectric coefficient of barium titanate is as high as 40% in all dense nano-crystal, which is higher than other materials made by traditional methods.

Barium titanate crystal is used in nonlinear optics. It has high optical coupling gain and can be maintained in visible and near infrared band.

Barium titanate has the highest reflectivity in the materials used in the application of self-pumped phase conjugation (SPPC). It can be used for four wave mixing (FWM) MW remote optical power. In photorefractive applications, it can be doped with other elements, such as cerium.

The inclusion of barium titanate in tin has shown that a bulk material with a higher stickiness strength than diamond is created. Barium titanate will change the shape and volume of the crystal during phase transition. This results in a negative bulk modulus of elasticity (Young’s modulus) of BaTiO3, which means that when a force is applied to the inclusion, it will displace in the opposite direction and further stiffen the composite.

The electro optical modulator (BaTiO3) film shows frequencies of more than 40 GHz.

The pyroelectric and ferroelectric properties of barium titanate are supposed to be used in thermal cameras such as non-cooling sensors.
