About Zirconium Carbide (ZrC) Powder
Zirconium carbide (ZrC) is an important high temperature structural material with high strength, corrosion resistance and good chemical stability. Its appearance is gray black and metallic luster cubic crystal. Its melting point is as high as 3540°C and boiling point is 5100°C. Relative density is 6.73. It’s insoluble in cold water and hydrochloric acid, but soluble in oxidizing acid, aqua regia, hydrofluoric acid, and molten caustic soda. Although it doesn’t decompose even when it is red hot and meets with water, it burns in oxygen when it is red hot. Fine powder is easy to cause sparks and react with chlorine, bromine, iodine and nitrogen to form halides or nitrides.
ZrC powder was prepared by reduction of zirconia with carbon, and then ZrC ceramic was prepared by molding and sintering. It can be used for electrodes, refractory crucibles and cathode electron emission materials. ZrC coating can be prepared by sponge zirconium iodization, sponge zirconium chlorination, sponge zirconium bromination, and zirconium tetrachloride powder methods. ZrC coatings with different properties can be obtained by selecting different process conditions. The low density and loose ZrC coatings have good thermal stress resistance and thermal insulation performance, and can be used as thermal insulation materials, while the dense ZrC coating with high density has good impermeability and can be used as protective coating.
Main Features
High purity, small particle size, uniform distribution, large specific surface area, high surface activity, low density, high temperature resistance, oxidation resistance, high strength, high hardness, good thermal conductivity.
Preparation
Zirconium carbide is prepared by carbon reduction of zircon in electric arc furnace. Zirconium carbide can also be prepared by reduction of zirconia with carbon in induction heating vacuum furnace.
Typical Applications:
- Zirconium carbide is used in fiber. Different zirconium carbide or silicon carbide powder content and addition methods have an impact on the near-infrared absorption performance of the fiber. When the zirconium carbide or silicon carbide fiber content is 4% (by weight), the fiber has the best near-infrared absorption performance.
- Zirconium carbide is applied in the new thermal insulation and temperature regulating textiles. Zirconium carbide has the characteristics of efficiently absorbing visible light and reflecting infrared rays. When it absorbs the short-wavelength energy below 2 μm, which accounts for 95% of sunlight, it can store the energy in the material through thermal conversion. It also has the characteristic of reflecting infrared wavelengths exceeding 2 μm.
- Zirconium carbide is used in hard alloy, powder metallurgy, abrasive, etc. Zirconium carbide is an important high melting point, high strength and corrosion resistance of high temperature structural material. Its excellent characteristics make it have great application space in cemented carbide. It can improve the strength and corrosion resistance of hard alloy.
- Zirconium carbide can be used as high temperature resistant coatings to improve the surface properties of materials.
- Zirconium carbide (ZrC) is used as a modifier of carbon-carbon composite functional materials. The modification of carbon fiber can greatly improve the strength of carbon fiber and improve carbon fiber fatigue resistance, enhance wear resistance and high temperature resistance. The modification effect of aerospace carbon fiber material is very obvious.
