About Titanium Carbide (TiC) Powder
Titanium Carbide (TiC) is a gray metallic face centered cubic lattice solid. Melting point is 3140±90°C. Boiling point is 4820°C. Relative density is 4.93. The hardness is greater than 9. It’s insoluble in water, but soluble in nitric acid and aqua regia. It is stable to air below 800°C, eroded by air above 2000°C, and reacts with pure O2 at 1150°C. It is used to make cemented carbide, and also used as electrodes and abrasive of arc lamps.

Typical Applications:
- Used as additive of cutting tool materials and melting crucible of Bi, Zn and CD, to prepare semiconductor wear-resistant film and HDD large capacity memory devices.
- It is an important component of cemented carbide and used as deoxidizer in the steel making industry.
- It can be used as cermet with high hardness, corrosion resistance and good thermal stability.
- Composite materials: Titanium carbide ceramics are super hard tool materials. TiC can be made into various composite ceramic materials with TiN, WC, Al2O3and other raw materials. Titanium carbide ceramic is used for high speed wire guide wheels and carbon steel cutting because it does not cause crescent wear with steel and has good oxidation resistance. Composite ceramic cutting tools containing titanium carbide have been widely used.
- Coating material: Titanium carbide as the surface coating is a very abrasion resistant material. Some strong carbides are plated on the diamond surface by physical or chemical methods to form metals or alloys. These metals or alloys can interact with carbon atoms on the diamond surface at high temperature to form stable carbides. These carbides can not only bond well with diamond, but also be well infiltrated by the matrix metal, so as to enhance the adhesion between diamond and the matrix metal. The service life of the cutter can be increased several times by deposition of titanium carbide thin film on the cutter.
Preparation Method
The mixture of carbon and titanium powder obtained by reduction of TiO2 with hydrogen reacts at high temperature. Or the mixture of TiO2 and carbon powder is pressed and agglomerated, and then heated to 2300-2700°C in an electric furnace and carbonized in H2 or CO atmosphere.
