CAS Number | 12024-21-4 |
Germanium Dioxide (GeO2) is also known as germanium(IV) oxide. It is white powder or colorless crystals. It has a hexagonal system which is slightly soluble in water (stable at low temperatures) or an insoluble orthorhombic system. The transition temperature is 1033 °C. Germanium dioxide’s melting point is 1115 °C and it volatilizes significantly at 1250 °C. It is soluble in hydrochloric acid and strong alkali. It is mainly used to make metal germanium, also used as spectral analysis and semiconductor materials.
Germanium is a semiconductor, which plays an important role in the development of solid-state physics and solid-state electronics. The melting density of germanium is 5.32 g/cm3. Germanium can be classified as a dispersed metal. Germanium has stable chemical properties and does not react with air or water vapor at room temperature. However, it is rapidly oxidized and forms germanium dioxide at 600-700 °C. It doesn’t react with hydrochloric acid or dilute sulfuric acid. But it dissolves slowly in heated concentrated sulfuric acid. Germanium easily dissolves in nitric acid and aqua regia. The effect of alkali solution on germanium is very weak, but the molten alkali can dissolve germanium rapidly in air. Germanium doesn’t react with carbon, so it can be melted in graphite crucible and will not be polluted by carbon. Germanium has good semiconductor properties, such as electron mobility, hole mobility, and so on.
NCE can provide the Germanium Oxide (GeO2) with high purity. The purity levels of 99.9999%, 99.999%, 99.99% are available on request. Please contact us for more details. Get a Quote Now! For other semiconductor materials, please check our Semiconductor Materials catalog page.
Typical Applications:
Germanium Oxide is used in germanium and electronic industry and used as a semiconductor material. It is prepared by heating oxidation of germanium or hydrolysis of germanium tetrachloride. It is used as a raw material for preparation of metal germanium and other germanium compounds, a catalyst for preparation of polyethylene terephthalate resin, a spectral analysis and semiconductor material. In addition, it can be used as a catalyst for conversion, dehydrogenation, gasoline fraction adjustment, color film and polyester fiber production. With the development of technology, germanium dioxide is widely used in the production of high-purity metal germanium, germanium compounds, chemical catalysts and pharmaceutical industries, PET resin, electronic devices, and so on.
